I have a friend doing an SSR project where she has to create a playlist for the book she is reading. I thought this was a interesting idea to do, and decided to do this for the next couple of books I read. I will try to explain why I chose each song without giving away too much of the book. The most recent book I finished was The Catcher in the Rye By: J.D. Salinger.
1. Help By: The Beatles
I chose this song because most of the book, Holden seems to have this cry out for help to everyone he meets, but no one seems to acknowledge him. This ends up putting him in more of a crisis, as no one can notice what is going on.
2. Choke By: I Don't Know How But They Found Me
Honestly, I chose this song because I get strong Holden vibes, thinking that he would listen to this song and find some relation to his life with it.
3. Bullet By: Hollywood Undead
Disclaimer: Bullet displays the strong topic of suicide and would advise not to listen to it without either consent of a parent (if you are under 18) or knowing that you can handle this type of song
I chose this song because it does cover the topic of suicide and I thought it would be a great song to mention when talking about Holden, especially the last minute of the song, where it talks about flying. Holden does constantly think about suicide, but something is always stopping him.
4. How to Save a Life By: The Fray
I chose this song because even though that no one notices his struggle, I think as a reader, you can feel him struggling and his call out for help. This song is more for the reader, I can imagine this song in my mind as I read about Holden's cry, it is the feeling like you want to do something to help him, but he is only a book character.
5. Teenagers By: My Chemical Romance
I chose this song because I feel that some of his cry for help is like teenage angst, that's why people don't notice him.
6. Don't Try Suicide By: Queen
This completely contradicts the other song, Bullet, but I figured it is an honorable mention, as Holden in the end decides not to kill himself and live his life as it is. (Also an amazing song that I applaud Queen for making because this is seriously risky with this sort of topic at the time)
7. Bohemian Rhapsody By: Queen
This is also at the top of my list of songs that Holden would listen to and relate with. The song can go into deeper meaning with fighting with the inner demons, as it is rumored that Freddie Mercury also wrote this song about him dealing with his own sexuality
8. Basket Case By: Green Day
This is also another teenage angst song that I think Holden would listen to.
9. Meant To Be Yours From: The Heathers Musical
I know this is sort of out of the ordinary compared to the rest of the playlist being more on the emo, alternative, rock side, but I think this is definitely one to mention. If you don't know the movie Heathers, it is basically about this girl named Veronica that teams up with a sociopath to kill the popular people in their school, staging them to be suicides. Specifically this song is the sociopath, JD professing his love to Veronica, as well as telling her about his plan to blow up the whole school. This does seem like another teenage angst song, but I think it also relates to Holden about the one girl that he liked and was close wiht that would line up all her kings on the checkerboard.
10. Chlorine By: Twenty One Pilots
I chose this song because for anyone who is a TOP fan, you should know that each album has some sort of story to go along with it, this certain album is about Tyler (one of the people in the band) wanting to escape from Dema (his demons). This particular song is about Tyler thinking about escaping Dema by killing himself (drinking chlorine- hence the song title) This does embody Holden because he constantly thinks about killing himself, but seems to fear what will happen once he is gone.
