So, I recently watched the movie Crazy Rich Asians (I know I'm late, I just really wanted to read the book first ) and this review is mainly going to be compared to the book itself. Overall, without comparing it to the book, the movie was pretty amazing! I loved the all Asian cast and every actor and actress just committed to their roles to the point where it was actually believable. Since I am comparing this to the book, there's obviously going to be a Spoiler Warning, just letting you know now.
First of all, I'm going to be saying all the good things first and then I can establish the criticisms I do have. I thought the cast was absolutely perfect, like I mentioned before. When I read the book, the actress (I only know her from Fresh Off the Boat) fit her description almost perfectly from the book! The actors were amazing as well and really took on the role as their character. I loved how they included Astrid's story in the movie as well. While reading the book, I loved reading from Astrid's POV because she acted differently compared to the rest of her family and it was great to see it in the movie. The wedding scene was amazing and beautiful! It was hard not to cry when this scene played, there wasn't any talking and the music can easily bring you to tears.
It's hard to find something that is bad about this movie, but I wished that Astrid's story was more in depth. In the book, Astrid explained her past his her ex, Charlie, and they even go all the way to Paris to see who Astrid's husband was cheating on her with. I feel that Astrid's story is more in depth in the book and shows a weakness in the Young family.
Overall, like I've said multiple times, Crazy Rich Asians definitely lived up to its hype and is one of the best book to movie adaptations that have ever come out. I can't wait to read the rest of the series.
Anicka
